HOUSTON – The city is planning a $131 million flood control project to develop a diversion channel and expand conveyance capacity in the downtown area.

The project includes construction of an approximately 200-ft-wide high-flow channel with a 60-ft-wide wet pilot channel, concrete retaining walls, and terracing.

Improvements include a paved maintenance and shared-use path, vegetated slopes, railroad bridge, and a roadway bridge.

Additional work includes utility adjustments, street reconstruction, trail connectivity improvements, and installation of vertical anchored walls in the Yale-Heights area.

Scope also includes removal of an abandoned rail bridge and channel modifications.

Construction is expected to begin in summer 2027.
