AUSTIN – The Independent — the off-kilter-styled luxury condo tower — has a groundbreaking scheduled for January 11, at the construction site near Third St. and West Ave.

The $300 million, 58-story structure will be the tallest in Austin when it’s completed in 2018. Balfour Beatty Construction has secured the general contractor assignment.

The international construction firm is dominating new construction along the north side of Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin.

The company is building the new Northshore high-rise apartments at the former Green Water Treatment Plant at the intersection of Cesar Chavez and San Antonio St. and recently earned the assignment to do major improvements at One Congress Plaza at the corner of Cesar Chavez St. and Congress Ave.

The project is a joint venture, which includes Austin-based Constructive Ventures and Aspen Heights. CIM Group of Los Angeles is a primary investor.
