SAN ANTONIO – Ground has been broken by Baptist Health System and Emerus on a new Baptist Emergency Hospital.

The Baptist Emergency Hospital Zarzamora is scheduled to open next year on San Antonio’s South Side.

The two-story facility will be constructed in South San Antonio — in a sector of the city Baptist officials said has long lacked adequate access to medical care.

Cost of construction is estimated at $9.75 million, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The licensed hospital will be on the ground floor and shell office space on the second floor.

The 38,500-sf micro-hospital will be situated on a site near I-35 and Zarzamora St. in ZIP code 78224.

It will house an emergency department, several inpatient beds, an advanced imaging center and an ambulatory service center.
